Book Birthday Bash: Blue Skies

Book Birthday Bash

Blue Skies by Anne BustardHappy Book Birthday to BLUE SKIES!

This middle-grade novel is the heartwarming story of ten-year old Glory Bea Bennett, who has never given up hope that her daddy will return from WWII. So when the Merci Train boxcar, filled with gifts of thanks from France, is scheduled to make an unexpected stop in her town, she’s certain that Daddy will come too.

We’re so happy you’re at our party for BLUE SKIES. Join in the fun…

All aboard the refurbished Texas Eagle dining car at the Austin Steam Train Association! It’s just like the one Glory Bea and her next-door neighbor Ben rode for about a minute. Only it’s reserved for us for two hours. Balloons and streamers in red, white, and blue decorate the interior of the car, while we don blue, white, and red party hats, the colors of the French flag, and shamrock pins.

We’ll listen to Blue Skies by Irving Berlin, sung by Ella Fitzgerald, and other popular songs from the era: I’m Looking Over a Four-Leaf Clover, The Glory of Love, I’ll Be Seeing You

Dr Pepper floats, popcorn, Milk Duds, red licorice, and Gram’s yummy butter cookies.

Let’s learn a couple of magic tricks and how to make a French poodle balloon animal. Thanks for the inspiration, Ben.

Speaking of thanks, it’s St. Patrick’s Day! And Glory Bea treasures her shamrock bracelet, given to her by her daddy. You can tell someone how lucky/thankful you are to know them on the petals of a paper shamrock, seal it in an envelope, and mail it off. Or use the shamrock to note things that you are thankful for.

Shamrock pins, deck of cards, balloons, and small French flags.
